An Alderman is the bridge between the people and City Hall. Their job is to solve neighborhood problems, bring resources into the community, and ensure residents have a voice in the operations of their city.
Key Responsibilities of an Alderman
Pass Laws and Ordinances
Vote on city laws, zoning changes, budgets, and policies.
Constituent Services
Assist residents with city services such as potholes, streetlights, sanitation, permits, abandoned buildings, and public safety concerns.
Public Safety Advocacy
Work with police, violence prevention groups, schools, and community organizations to address crime and safety concerns.
Approve City Spending
Help decide how tax dollars are spent.
Economic Development
Attract businesses, jobs, and investments to the ward.
Zoning and Development
Influence what businesses, housing, and developments can be built in the ward.
Community Representation
